My Postpartum Journey (+ Tips for Surviving and Thriving in the Early Days of Motherhood)

Postpartum Motherhood Journey

published on: March 8, 2022

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Let’s chat like friends over coffee as I share parts of my postpartum journey as a first-time mama, with plenty of tips and takeaways throughout! A few months ago, I shared Colin’s birth story on the podcast (episode #148), and you guys LOVED it. Thank you for all the kind messages and feedback on it. If it was impactful to you in some way, I’m grateful! That was my prayer in sharing all of it.

And now, I want to share about my postpartum journey! I’m sharing what those early days and weeks were like with a newborn. We’re talking about things like family visits, breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, relationship with your spouse, exercise, postpartum healing, and so much more. And, if you’re not a new or expecting mama, I’ll also be sharing some ways you can help and offer grace to the new mama in your life.

It’s easy to forget what those early days are like with a newborn. I definitely have forgotten plenty already! But, I outlined the majority of this episode when Colin was 3 months old, while things were very fresh! And now I’m recording it when he’s almost 6 months old. I’ll be focusing on those EARLY days, and not so much life right now. I’ll save that for another episode.

I want to acknowledge that everyone’s situation is so incredibly different, and I am sharing from the lens of my own experience, which is likely different from yours. Some of the topics I talk about in this episode are sensitive ones and we all have our own opinions and experiences. I hope you’ll have grace for me as I try to vulnerably share my experience (and offer advice) the best I can! Be sure to listen to the full episode to hear the whole story!

Book recommendations to encourage you as a new mama:

All I See Is You by Jessica Urlich: If you listen to the episode, this is the book that the poem I read at the end is from. It is full of beautiful, raw tellings of the motherhood journey.

A Heart So Full: Inspirational Messages for New Mamas: This book covers the first 12 weeks postpartum and has an encouraging (and short) message for you each day. I truly loved this one and how easy it was to read!

Risen Motherhood: I LOVE this book, and am still in the process of reading it. They cover everyday motherhood topics from a gospel perspective. I also love their podcast, Risen Motherhood, if you’re looking for a show to encourage you as a new mama!

Breastfeeding Friendly Clothing Finds:

My Favorite Amazon PJs for easy breastfeeding: These are the short-sleeved and shorts version. Great for summer and hotter months. And, these are the same PJs for with long pants and sleeves. I wore both every other night for MONTHS! They are extremely comfortable, cozy, and cute! TTS - I have a small in both.

This was my go-to everyday breastfeeding top! It’s comfy and cute. I got it in a few colors to have some variety and would wear it around the house with leggings or shorts!

This dress from Pink Lily is super cute and buttons down for easy breastfeeding! (See it pictured for our newborn photos!)

This top is also very breastfeeding friendly (because of the loose fit and deep neckline). Love it for summer!

This is my favorite nursing bra from Soma. I have it in 2 colors! Very comfortable and great for both around the house and going out.

Other Postpartum Resources Mentioned In This Episode:

I mention a few times in the episode using a Solly baby wrap for wearing Colin during naps. This is the one we have! It worked great for us until about 3 months, then we started using the Ergo Baby carrier for babywearing.

I love and recommend the My Essential Birth Course and their podcast, Pregnancy, and Birth Made Easy! Both were so helpful in my pregnancy and postpartum journey.

We LOVE Taking Cara Babies and literally have every single product she offers. We did her ABCs of Sleep course for sleep training (as referenced in this episode), and I think the great sleep foundation we laid from all of her other trainings really helped sleep training be “easy” for Colin (and us!). The newborn class was especially helpful to us as clueless first-time parents. We watched it at the end of my pregnancy, then refreshed ourselves on it a few weeks into Colin being born.

Another thing I mentioned in this episode was having someone set up a Meal Train for you before or right after your baby arrives! This is a great way for friends and family to help that easily organizes who is bringing what meals to your house and when or even send a gift card!
