Is Showit Only For Photographers?

Reading Time: 5 minutes

“If I’m not a photographer, should I use Showit?” — a question I’ve been seeing for YEARS now! The short answer: YES! Showit is for non-photographers, too. If you’re not a photographer, but you are a business owner who wants creative control over your website, then yes, 100% Showit is for you! In fact, the majority of my clients and customers aren’t photographers (or even in the wedding industry), but instead are in industries like coaching, consulting, bookkeeping, blogging, course creation, designers, health and wellness, virtual assistant, marketing, and others!

So, if you don’t consider yourself creative, you’ve never touched a camera and you definitely aren’t in the wedding industry… Showit is still perfect for your business. My non-photographer clients love that Showit allows them to do things like…

  • Update their website on their own — without hiring a designer and without doing any coding
  • Actually edit the template they purchase — with Showit, literally everything you see in a template, from the colors and fonts to the layout itself, is editable.
  • Create a website that’s different from everyone else in their industry
  • Control their SEO with ease so that they can actually rank on Google
  • Get their website live and launched quickly (and with ease!)

So, if Showit isn’t just a website builder for photographers, then WHO IS it best for?

Showit isn’t just for photographers. Here’s who Showit is GREAT for…

You’ll see Showit templates used by basically any business that wants a super cool and unique website design! Yes, Showit is HUGE among photographers, videographers, and other wedding industry pros (like wedding planners, florists, and venues), but like I’ve said… it’s not just for photographers.

A lot of different industries, right?! I’ve had template customers who fit into every single one of these categories. They use Showit (and LOVE IT), as non-photographers!

So, who is Showit NOT good for then?

I just listed a ton of industries that Showit is excellent for, but Showit isn’t necessarily the right website builder for every single business out there. The main factors I’d argue make Showit possibly not the right fit for your business is e-commerce needs.

If you are an online retailer with lots of products that change out frequently, then Showit likely isn’t right for you. Yes, you can do e-commerce with Showit. (I do!) But when you’re needing a shop with any more than 20 items, I’d recommend Shopify instead.

Why Showit is associated with the photography industry — The History of Showit (in a nutshell):

Showit was co-founded by Todd Watson in 2006. Years later, Todd is still the CEO of Showit, and the company is co-owned with his amazing wife, Elisa Watson. I can speak from knowing them, Todd and Elisa are incredible people and have such a heart for building community and helping small businesses.

The original “Showit Desktop” was launched in 2008 and was completely geared towards photographers back then. It was literally a website builder “for photographers”. The original roots of Showit are why I think so many people still associate it as “just for photographers”! Showit also used to be associated with the company Pass (which is for photographers and was created alongside Showit Co-Founder, David Jay). The two companies split completely in 2014. Showit5 was launched in early 2016 — This was a HUGE (and amazing) shift from Showit Desktop, which was built on Adobe Flash. From my perspective, Showit really took off with Showit5 and that’s when I started hearing about it as a designer.

Showit also hosts a yearly conference in Arizona called “United”, and this conference is specifically for photographers. I’ve been to United as a website designer in a sea of photographers and still gained so much value. It’s a conference focused on building your photography business, making industry friends, and having TONS of fun. In 2019, I even left the conference with the amazing award — ”Showiteer of the Year”!

Since its start in 2006, Showit has moved to no longer supporting the original Showit Desktop, and Showit5 is now just “Showit '' since there’s only ONE website builder available. Even though Showit launched as the “website builder for photographers,” they now aim to make it clear in their marketing that Showit is for ANY business that wants creative control over their website. Showit has grown to 30+ employees and is still based in the beautiful Gilbert, Arizona! As a company, you can’t help but fall in love with their team, their mission, and all the ways they aim to help small businesses!

“But what if I’m NOT creative… Is Showit still a good fit for me?”:

I mentioned that Showit is great for businesses that want creative control over their websites. Does that mean you need to be “creative”? Absolutely not! In fact, I’d say if you’re not creative, Showit is great for you because you can just buy an awesome creative template and still get a stellar website.
